la orana Maria (Ave Maria) - Paul Gauguin. 113.7x87.6

Seeing the island of Tahiti, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) discovered a huge world that gave rich food to his passion for bright color, combined with the complex symbolism of the paintings. During his first stay on the island, even before Gauguin began to depict in his works the motives of Tahitian cults, he once again turned to the Christian theme.

The painter depicted Mary and the Babywhere the angel points to two women standing with their hands prayerfully folded. The characters of the canvas are Tahitians, in island clothes, and around them - the nature of Tahiti, bright, abundant, blooming and fruitful, not only symbolizing earthly paradise, but also sending the viewer's imagination to heaven. In the foreground, Gauguin depicted a table for offerings, on which lie yellow and red bananas and breadfruit. The picture is painted in bright colors, but among this splendor of color stands out the scarlet pareo of Our Lady.

Gauguin foresaw that his work with such an unusual depiction on the subject of Christian history would surprise the public, and it really caused a lot of responses, most of which were admired.
