Pair portrait - Jean-Baptiste de Champaign and Nicola de Platt. 1654
Before us is a pair portrait of two modestly dressed young people. de Champaign made me. ” The second young man is drawing. On the plate where his sheet lies, the inscription is visible: “N. Montagne wrote to me. ”
On the edge of the picture hanging from the table, there is a date - 1654. It was in this year that this was written double portrait of two good friends - painters Jean-Baptiste de Champaign (1631–1681) and Nicola de Platt Montagne (1631–1706), which has become not only a monument to their friendship, but also a testament to their professional maturity.
An interesting juxtaposition of characters (the seriousness and concentration of one, the ease and youthful attractiveness of the other), thoughtful composition, skillful, “strong” painting with strict restraint of color make this early picture one of the peaks in the work of both artists.
